New MD Law Requires Children Under 13 To Wear PFD

Under the new law, effective immediately, any child under the age of 13 is required to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) while aboard a vessel that is underway.

Young Angler Catches State Record Fish

Three and a half year old sets Maryland state record while fishing with his dad at a favorite farm pond while casting a small chartreuse grub lure with his ultra-light spinning outfit. His catch was a 1lb, 8oz rock bass that measured 12 inches long.

The 2nd Annual Rockfish Shootout at Coltons Point Marina will be held May 15-16th, 2010. Entries are limited this year to 75 boats so get in quickly before registration is full. The registration fee is $225 per boat ($250 after April 9th) and the tournament is for amateur fisherman only.

Susquehanna Flats Striped Bass Catch and Release Season

The special catch and release striped bass fishing season on the Susquehanna Flats, which opened on March 1 and runs through May 3, is picking up as the water warms and the native stripers return for the spawning season. Reports from the Flats indicate that the action is best in the channels leading to Havre de Grace and North East, Md.

DNR Submits 2010 Flounder Regulations

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service has submitted 2010 recreational summer flounder regulations to the General Assembly for approval. The proposal limits coastal and Bay anglers to a three fish creel with a 19-inch minimum size from April 17 through November 22.

New permanent regulations pertaining to the catch, possession and use as bait of crayfish became effective October 2009. The regulations apply to Middle Potomac River, Upper Potomac River and Susquehanna River Basins. In these basins, anglers may not catch, use or possess any species of crayfish unless the head is removed immediately upon capture.

Striper season for MD closed on December 15 and it has been one heck of a Fall season. By all estimates it was probably one of the best fall seasons we have had in quite some time. A lot of anglers hooked up with citations and personal best catches. There were plenty of Rockfish caught over 40lbs and some above 50lbs.

The area that has seems to be on fire is from Chesapeake Beach to Point No Point. Most of big cows have been holding over deeper water from 40 to 75 feet and at times holding close to the bottom as well. Some smaller schoolie rockfish are holding in 25 to 35 feet so for the big boys get your baits down.

Fishermen in the middle bay region have been venturing out into the bay waters and testing their trolling tackle along the edges of the shipping channel and shaking the bugs out of boats and gear. At times fishermen are reporting catching and releasing some nice fish while trolling large parachutes and bucktails behind umbrella rigs or in tandem. Channel edges such as the area around Bloody Point and the western side of the channel below Chesapeake Beach have been getting some attention. Light tackle enthusiasts continue to drift in the warm water discharge at the Calvert Cliffs Power Plant while jigging soft plastic jigs such as BKD's or metal jigs.
